Bad300i6… Viper $85k. 0 - 60 less than 4 seconds. 0-100-0 in less than 13 seconds. 202 MPH top speed. It is a blast to drive, but it can all be over in a couple seconds, if one is not extremely careful. I can assure you, with poor roads and weather in this state, there’s no way I want to get even close to that speed any time soon. As for diesels, I do R & D on them, so I understand their potential and the costs associated with the old and new technology. May you and yours enjoy that Dodge diesel and live a happy long life together. Cheers.

A viper, Ok that's not cheap. I could spend my money on something else. As for the diesel truck I don't know about top speed because it is limited by gearing. I like diesels. You would be surprised how much you can squeeze out of one of them. I have one that is 318ci and only turns 2800rpm and it makes over 400hp and 780ft/lbs. The cummins runs in the 8's in the 1/8th. Most diesels except the new one's can run on vegetable oil so they are much cheaper to operate than most vehicles. I could debate all day about what is better but i'll stick to the topic at hand. Diesels are more efficient than gas powered motors. And because they have more industrial style designs they last longer. The initial cost is higher but in the long run they are better. As long as you don't have to have a new car all the time it pays off to own a diesel.

Bad300i6, I never said the Prius was the only vehicle I drive. I also drive a ‘08 600 HP Dodge SRT-10 Viper, which I'm sure is nowhere near the fun of a 6800 lb Sunday school bus. I'm sorry…your post didn't state the top speed of that diesel truck you’re so proud of?

Ok cool prius guy, You can say what you want but I know several people that run their 3/4 and 1 ton trucks on vegetable oil. That is about as green as it gets. It costs them mere cents to do so. They can drive as far as they want some of them have bed mounted fuel transfer tanks so that they can drive 2500 miles between fill ups. You can tell me how much better a prius is but if you get hit by a 6800 lb dodge cummins who wins. Id rather drive something that not only hauls an entire family comfortably, but is fuel efficient, is off road capable, is not afraid of puddles( our city needs to learn what drainage means) can survive and win in an accident, and is faster than any prius will every be. Before you even say that the prius is more efficient than the cummins, you make your prius weight the same and make the motor about 10 times bigger and tell me who gets better mileage then.

I definitely will consider a diesel vehicle for my next purchase. There is supposedly a plant being built in Pa. that will turn coal into diesel fuel and that will be a plus for all concerned except the OPEC.

About time had more choice. Remember my Aunt's diesel rabbit, was noisy & ran rough but not really smelly (compared to cars back then anyway) & she avg'd 50+ mpg.
Their efficiency & characteristics make them ideal for hybrids as well... but no small diesels are here.

Any one remember the VW Rabbit diesel? I had one in the 80's and got 50 MPG! Yea it was small and vibrated so bad you could not use the inside rear view mirror, but 50 MPG!!
When will we get the sub 2.0L engines in the compacts? I don't need a big diesel SUV right now.

LoveLee: You said that typically a Diesel gets less MPG than a Gas Engine. Are you comparing a Dodge Dually to a Honda Civic? You have to compare Apples to Apples if you are going to make statements like that. You should compare something like a F-250 with a V10 compared to the F-250 with the 7.3 or 6.0 Diesels to get a usable comparison.

Thanks Manwe. I have an E320 that is not diesel and I love it. It costs very little to maintain and I get similar gas mileage to your vehicle.

Nice article, sadly though the Germans aren't offering diesel cars that the average Joe can afford. Hopefully this will change in the next few years after the wave of 200+ hp cars start selling. Nobody really needs a 265 hp diesel car. Not that it's not way cool, but I'd prefer a 120 hp car that gets better mpg.

Really diesel is the way to go. Take a Volkswagen bug with the 2.0L diesel. It gets 40mgp in town thats not bad. I have a friend who needed a bigger truck to haul his race car. For a while he had been trying to use his half ton short bed Chevy pickup which gets about 15mpg unloaded on highway. He recently bought a 01 Ford Powerstroke equipped F-250 and now enjoys 25mpg and can haul his race car with no worries. Thats a trade off a truck that weighs in at twice the weight of his old truck is bigger in every dimension is 4wd and has a bigger motor. 444ci as opposed to 355. Not only that but with all that he picked up ten miles per gallon. Im not saying that is a huge difference but put that same motor in something smaller and lighter, gear it differently and make it 2wd and you would have a very fuel friendly vehicle.
